Extremely Sad News : HM Amit Shah Grieves Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh's Demise

TPN ,New Delhi, Dec 27: Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday night at the age of 92 at AIIMS in Delhi.

Taking to social media platform X, Amit Shah wrote: "The news of the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is extremely sad. From being the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India to the Finance Minister of the country and as the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh played an important role in the governance of the country. I express my condolences to his family and supporters in this hour of grief. May Waheguru grant peace to his soul and give strength to his family to bear this grief."

The news of Dr. Singh's death was confirmed by AIIMS, which issued a statement stating: "With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 p.m.”

Dr. Singh, who served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was widely recognized for his transformative role in steering India’s economy through a period of significant liberalization.

He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly, with national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, likely to pay their respects.

Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics. His leadership and legacy, particularly his role in economic reforms during the 1990s and his two terms as Prime Minister, will continue to inspire future generations.

Earlier this year, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha, with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge praising his long and distinguished parliamentary career. Singh had risen to prominence as the country’s Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 in the government led by P.V. Narasimha Rao, where he introduced sweeping economic reforms that transformed India's economy.

As the two-term Prime Minister of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Singh served in the highest office from 2004 to 2014, and remained an influential figure in Indian politics. He represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for five terms, before moving to Rajasthan in 2019.

His last intervention in Parliament was a critique of demonetization, which he described as an "organized loot and legalized plunder.”
