Mohammad Yousuf has resigned from his position as a selector for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), citing “personal reasons.” His departure comes just days after Pakistan’s disappointing 2-0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh, which has raised concerns about the team’s performance.
Yousuf, who was appointed as a selector in March 2024, was part of the selection panel responsible for the squad chosen for the recent T20 World Cup. Unfortunately, Pakistan failed to advance beyond the group stage, leading to intense scrutiny and criticism of the team’s performance.
Despite the backlash, Yousuf retained his role, but the loss to Bangladesh marked a turning point that prompted his resignation ahead of the upcoming Test series against England, which begins on October 7.
In his resignation announcement posted on ‘X’, Yousuf expressed pride in having served the national team: “I announce my resignation as a selector for the Pakistan cricket team for ‘personal reasons.’ Serving this incredible team has been a profound privilege, and I am proud to have contributed to the growth and success of Pakistan Cricket. I have immense faith in the talent and spirit of our players and wish our team all the best as they continue to strive for greatness.”
In addition to his role as selector, Yousuf was also the head coach of the Pakistan U19 team, which secured third place in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa.
As a former player, Yousuf boasts an impressive record, having played 90 Tests, 288 ODIs, and three T20Is, accumulating over 17,000 international runs, including 39 centuries and 97 fifties.
Pakistan’s struggles in the World Test Championship have been evident, as the team currently sits eighth on the points table with only 16 points, having secured just two victories out of seven matches.
