TPN , Hyderabad : The second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project is poised to be a significant investment, with expected costs exceeding ₹32,237 crore. Final preparations for the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are underway for six proposed corridors totaling 116.2 kilometers, according to Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd (HAML) Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy.
Among the major components of this phase is the Airport Metro corridor, which will connect Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) to the planned Fourth City. This corridor alone is estimated to cost around ₹8,000 crore and will be implemented as a joint venture between the Telangana and Central governments, mirroring other Metro projects across India.
Reddy informed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy that the DPRs for all corridors are nearing completion and that HAML is currently awaiting the traffic study report from the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) being developed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). This report is essential for validating traffic projections, which must be cross-checked with the CMP as part of the approval process for the Centre.
The Airport Metro alignment is being finalized to run via Aramghar and the new High Court location on National Highway 44, ultimately reaching Shamshabad Airport.
The proposed corridors include:
- Corridor IV (Airport Metro): Spanning 36.6 km from Nagole to RGIA, this corridor will pass through key areas like L.B. Nagar and Karmanghat, featuring 24 metro stations—23 elevated and one underground at the airport.
- Corridor V: An 11.6 km extension of the Blue Line from Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis, comprising eight elevated stations.
- Corridor VI (Old City Corridor): A 7.5 km line extending from MGBS to Chandrayangutta, designed to connect the Old City area.
- Corridor VII: A 13.4 km extension of the Red Line from Miyapur to Patancheru, featuring ten elevated stations.
- Corridor VIII: A 7.1 km extension from L.B. Nagar to Hayat Nagar along the Vijayawada highway, consisting of six elevated stations.
- Corridor IX: Planned to extend from RGIA to the Fourth City via Mansanpally Road, this 40 km line will include both elevated and underground sections.
The project is set to affect approximately 1,100 properties due to road widening and Metro alignment, with notifications already issued for 400 of these. Measures are being taken to preserve 103 religious and heritage structures along the routes.
As the DPRs move towards finalization, officials are optimistic that the second phase will significantly enhance public transportation in Hyderabad, offering improved connectivity and reducing congestion.
